GATE - Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) jointly administer the conduct of GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The operations related to GATE in each of the 8 zones are managed by a zonal GATE Office at the IITs or IISc.

The Organizing Institute (OI) is responsible for the end-to-end process and coordination amongst the administering Institutes. Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is the Organizing Institute for GATE 2018.

GATE Eligibility criteria

Candidates who have obtained/are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India: i) must have completed or are in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree (duration: at least 4 years) in Engineering/Technology or; ii) must have completed or are in the final year of their Post Graduate (Master’s) degree (duration: at least 2 years) in any relevant subjects in science.

Note: If a candidate is pursuing any higher degree or has already obtained a degree higher than that mentioned in the above table, the candidate should select the minimum required qualifying degree while filling the application form.

GATE Application Form & fees

GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) An online interface is provided for your interaction with the GATE Office.GATE 2018 application fee payments would have to be made through online by using net banking or debit card or e-challan facilities. Additional charges will be applicable as per the rule of the bank from where the money is being transferred.This charge will be specified on the payment portal.

NOTE: Requests for change of examination city will be accepted till 16th November with a fee of 400/-(four hundred only) to be paid online using GOAPS.

GATE Application Process: 

Candidates have to register and fill the application via ONLINE mode ONLY through GOAPS. The photograph, signature, thumb impression, qualifying degree certificate, and category certificate (SC/ST/PWD) wherever applicable, must be uploaded during the online application. Candidates shall be required to enter the specified number in their identification card of any one of Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, valid College ID, Employee identification or and Driving License. The candidates who do not have any of these identity cards, may please get one of these cards issued before application procedure. Please note that no application form is available for sale anywhere. For International candidates, ONLY a valid Passport/ Government issued ID/College ID/ Employee ID shall be accepted as the recognized identification.

GATE Syllabus & Exam Pattern

Examinations for all the 23 papers (disciplines) will be conducted by an ONLINE Computer Based Test (CBT). A candidate can appear only in any one paper of the GATE examination.Rest of the questions shall be of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type.A virtual on screen calculator only shall be used during examination.The candidates shall use ONLY virtual calculator to be provide by GATE.

GATE Exam Pattern:

Total marks and time (no candidate shall be allowed to leave the exam hall before the complete exam duration of 3 Hours)

Marking Scheme:

For 1-mark multiple-choice questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark multiple-choice questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. There is NO negative marking for numerical answer type questions.

General Aptitude (GA) Questions

In all papers, GA questions carry a total of 15 marks. The GA section includes 5 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 10 marks).

Question Papers other than GG, XE and XL

These papers would contain 25 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub- total 25 marks) and 30 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 60 marks). The question paper will consist of questions of multiple choice and numerical answer type. For numerical answer questions,

choices will not be given. Candidates have to enter the answer (which will be a real number, signed or unsigned, e.g., 25.06, -25.06, 25, -25 etc.) using a virtual keypad. The questions shall be mentioned with up to which decimal places, the candidates need to make an answer. Also, an appropriate range will be considered while evaluating the numerical answer type questions so that the candidate is not penalized due to the usual round-off errors.

GATE Admit Card

The Admit Card can only be downloaded from the GATE portal from 5th January 2018 (tentative). Admit Cards shall NOT be sent by post/email. Bring a colour print-out of the downloaded Admit Card to the Test Centre along with the original and valid photo identification photocopy / scanned copy/invalid or expired identification.

GATE Results & Score Card

GATE 2018 results will be announced on March 27, 2018 at 17:00 hours and will be available on the GATE Online Application Website. GATE 2018 score is valid for THREE YEARS from the date of announcement of the results.After the declaration of results, qualified candidates can download their GATE 2018 Score Card for the paper (for which he/she has taken the examination).

The GATE 2018 score cards can be downloaded between March 27, 2018 to May 26, 2018 from the GOAPS portal of gate website. In case any candidate requires a soft copy of his/her GATE Score Card after May 26, 2018 till December 31, 2018, they can do so by paying a fee of 500 (five hundred only) on the GOAPS portal.
