The Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology (GCECT) Kolkata in 1941 by Professor Sasadhar Ray. GCECT is a public autonomous located in Kolkata, West Bengal. AICTE has approved the GCECT Kolkata. It is allied with the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. The NAAC has awarded an "A" rating for academic excellence. Besides, engineering courses are accredited by NBA.

Initially, the college started with certificate and diploma courses in Ceramic Technology with 6 other different streams to educate students for several ceramic industries in eastern India and other regions of India. The individuality of this college is that it is one of the oldest institutes for offering technical education in ceramic science & engineering. Besides, GCECT is the only college offering full-fledged UG and PG courses in Ceramic Technology in West Bengal State.

GCECT Kolkata Courses include B Tech in CSE, Ceramic Technology, and Information Technology. In addition, the college offers M Tech in Ceramic Technology and IT. Diploma holders are eligible to get admission into B Tech Lateral. GCECT fee structure for B Tech is INR 29k per annum. The annual fee for the M Tech program is INR 17k.

The West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam (WBJEE), followed by counseling, is the basis for GCECT B.Tech admission. The West Bengal Joint Entrance Lateral Entry Test (JELET) results determine admission to the B Tech Lateral. In addition, students applying for M Tech must appear for WBUT PGET.

The Institute has highly competent faculty members, 35% of whom hold doctoral degrees. The remainder is postgraduate degree holders. More than 100 research articles and speeches by the faculty have been published in Indian and international journals. In addition, several R&D projects funded by the DST, UGC, AICTE, and others are ongoing, some of which have already been successfully finished. These successes unquestionably demonstrate that this Institute is where intellects are nurtured.

GCECT has collaborated with reputed national and international universities for postgraduate, project, and Ph.D. programs. Some collaborated universities are Petronus University in Malaysia, the Northern University in Saudi Arabia, the Curtin University in Australia, the Jadavpur University, the Calcutta University, the Presidency University, the CGCRI, and the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics.

Additionally, the Institute encourages strong student involvement in the NSS program. It's also important to note that the college has already acquired some financial autonomy after completing its TEQIP-1 phase and is poised to receive academic autonomy from the University Grants Commission.
