MAT - Management Aptitude Test

MAT or Management Aptitude Test happens to be a national level entrance examination which is organized every year by AIMA or All India Management Association. Candidates who are willing to seek admission in the management education can appear for this entrance test. The examination is conducted four times every year in the month of December, February, September and May. Students of architecture, medicine, engineering, science, and computer can appear for the test for pursuing a career in Management.

The examination is conducted both in Computer and paper mode.Candidates can select Computer based entrance examination or Paper Based Examination in accordance with the convenience. National and International business schools take MAT score into consideration for providing admission in PGDM and MBA courses. MAT will be your passport to more than 600 business schools across the country.

Candidates need to fulfill the eligible criteria for appearing in the exam. It is essential to check the criteria to avoid confusion later on. The entrance test of MAT comprises of 200 questions. There will be negative marking of 1/4 for every wrong answer. MAT test primarily comprises of five sections which are inclusive of data analysis, Mathematical skills, intelligence, comprehension, critical reasoning.

There is no age limit for appearing in the MAT test. Students of any age can appear for this entrance examination. Candidates who are willing to appear for MAT test can apply online. After submission of the form online, the examination committee will scrutinize the form after which they will release the acknowledgment slip. MAT Sept.  online application form will be start from first week of July and MAT Dec. 2020 online application from October.

MAT Exam Date

There is nothing to worry if candidates did not clear MAT in the first attempt or could not appear for MAT in February month. MAT exam takes place 4times in a year that is in the month of February, May, September and December. It has both paper based test and computer based test and below tabulated are the tentative dates of MAT exam for February and September session.

  • From the below table one could get an idea of when to register, to receive the admit card and MAT exam date in prior, so accordingly one can prepare for the MAT examination.
  • The total duration of MAT test is for 2:30 hours
  • In total there are 3 different modes to take MAT examination in which candidates can choose one in that as per their convenience and those are:
    1. Paper Based Test (PBT) – while registering for MAT candidates will get to choose 5 colleges. A sealed question booklet and an OMR answer sheet will be provided inside the examination hall. Answers once darkened cannot be changed and should use only black or blue pens.
    2. Computer Based Test (CBT) – Same as PBT candidates can choose 5 colleges while registering, in the examination venue candidates need to sit in front of the computer so candidates must be familiar with the usage of computer monitoring. Here, once answered can be changed by selection other option.
    3. Both PBT & CBT – Here, candidates have an option of choosing 2 more colleges as a total 7 colleges and can be opted at the time of registration. And the rest of the procedure is same as PBT and CBT separately.

MAT Eligibility criteria

Before applying or filling the application form of MAT Exam, aspirants must be aware of the eligibility criteria so it would help them go ahead with the further process and not get the application forms rejected.

  • Qualification: Graduation from a recognised university in any discipline is required and final year students of their graduation can also apply for MAT Exam. Minimum percentage of graduation differs depending on the participating MBA institutions of MAT Exam.
  • Job Experience: In order to apply for MAT prior work experience does not count, basically it is not required.
  • Age: There are no criteria as age limit like candidates are not prohibited to apply for MAT Exam because of their age.
  • Maximum Attempts: As given above the exam will be conducted four times in a year and regardless of their previous attempts, aspirants can appear for MAT exam how many ever times they want if they feel the score is low and can improve by taking one more chance however, the latest score will be taken into consideration.
  • Nationality: To sit for MAT exam Indian and Foreign Nationals are allowed and the eligibility criteria are same.

MAT Application Form & fees

With the basic eligibility to apply, candidates can register themselves online that is in the official website of AIMA and there is no other mode available. In total 4 times MAT application forms will be announced once the application forms are released aspirants will have to register and go ahead with the MAT application process. Aspirants are advised to read the form thoroughly and fill the complete valid details.

How to apply for MAT Exam:

Step 1: Registration

Visit the official portal of AIMA, now click the register button to go ahead with the registration, application process is possible only if the candidate registers by creating an account. Through OTP process students email ID and phone number will be verified. Name, DOB, Email-ID, Mobile Number and Password are few information that has to be filled while registering.

Step 2: Filling the application form:

Candidates will fill the application form with complete details making sure provided information like personal details, education details and their priorities or choices given are correct. Details like Test Taking Option, Test Centre, Personal Particulars, Qualification, Photo ID, choice etc.

Step 3: Upload Photograph and Signature:

After filling the complete details in the application form candidate’s photographs and signature need to be scanned and the copy of that will be uploaded. Recent passport size colour photographs are required preferably with white background. On a white paper put your signature with black ink pen and scan the signature area only.

Step 4: Payment of Application Fee:

In the procedure of filling the application form candidates have the option to make the payment through Debit Card/Credit Card or Net Banking or can also be submitted via Demand Draft (DD). And MAT application form differs slightly based on mode of test.

MAT Syllabus & Exam Pattern

If there are any changes in the Exam pattern will be informed in prior and candidates need to check in the official portal. MAT Exam is conducted in both offline and online mode. If candidates are aware of the exam pattern and thoroughly prepare for the same it gives candidates a verge to get prepared and perform confidently. MAT Exam preparation tips:

If candidates prepare in a strategic manner one will be able to complete the syllabus on time and cope with the number of questions that can be solved in the given period of time. Below given are the few tips that can help students prepare judiciously for MAT exam.

  • Time Management: Time is the most important thing once crossed can never get back so manage time accordingly while preparing for the MAT exam and in the examination hall. Candidates should not kill time being stuck in same question for long minutes.
  • Accuracy: Concentrate more on those topics or questions that can fetch one more marks in exam like if the candidates are good in current affairs or English grammar make sure you become perfect in those areas.
  • Timetable: Candidates need to check for the exam pattern and MAT syllabus before they start studying for the exam. Make a habit of reading newspaper or watching television or some source to know current affairs and latest news. After making the time table make sure you follow the same routine to get confident and be prepared before entering the MAT exam hall.

MAT Admit Card

MAT Admit Card will be released by AIMA after MAT online applications are accepted and can download the admit card in the official port. Downloading the admit card facility will be given only for certain days and within that candidates should have downloaded. For MAT paper based exam and MAT computer based exam separate MAT admit card will be announced by AIMA. Once the exam is over Admit card download process will be closed by AIMA. MAT admit card is so important that without showing the admit card candidates cannot enter the exam hall.

  • Exam day guidelines: institutions that candidates need to follow on the exam day.

MAT Results & Score Card

Once the results are disclosed for both online and offline mode can check for the results in the official portal of AIMA and can download the score card by entering their roll number and registered mobile number. Candidates can get to know both marks as well percentile secured by them in the MAT examination.

  • MAT exam results will be announced online only
  • MAT score is valid for one year
  • Candidates will have to send the score card to the prior chosen management institutions during online registration
  • MAT exam score card comprise section wise percentile, section wise marks and overall percentile.
  • Candidates are advised to safeguard the downloaded score card until their admission to the college.

MAT Counselling & Admission

Nearly in 600 B-Schools there will be admission opportunities opening for MBA aspirants because it is considered one of the prestigious entrance exam there will be number of MBA and PGDM candidates willing to seek admissions.

  • MAT admissions to MBA colleges will be done based on candidate’s aptitude test performance and for those participating colleges candidates need to apply individually.
  • To seek admission each                university will have their own eligibility criteria and standard selection process. And the admission process will be completed based on exam score and document verification.
  • Some institutes do conduct PI and GD rounds, while few colleges accept direct entry based on test score.

AIMA conducts the MAT counselling process for the aspirants looking for MBA admissions in various affiliated colleges. Each participating management institutes will conduct MAT counselling individually. After the MAT results are announced the counselling will be held then the further selection process and document verification will be done for those shortlisted candidates.
