This college started in 1941. So it is more than 80 years old. That is a very long time. It is a government college so the state government takes care of it. The college is near the sea in Worli which is a nice area in Mumbai. The university that gives the degree is Maharashtra University of Health Sciences which is in Nashik. The college is also approved by the Central Council of Indian Medicine. This means the degree you get here is valid all over India.
There is also a CCRAS building in the campus. CCRAS means Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences. This is a big research organisation of the Government of India. Not many colleges have this on their campus. So students here get good research facilities.
This college only teaches Ayurveda. It does not have engineering or other courses. But it has many good courses in Ayurveda. Let me tell you about them one by one.
BAMS – Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery
This is the most popular course in this college. BAMS is a 5 and a half year course. One year of that is internship. The college has 60 seats for BAMS. Many students want these seats so it is very competitive. In this course, students learn both old Ayurvedic knowledge and modern medical topics.
MD in Ayurveda – Doctor of Medicine
This is a postgraduate course. It is 3 years long. Students who already have BAMS can do this. There are many subjects to choose in MD like Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma, Prasuti Evam Stri Roga, Shalakya Tantra, Rasashastra, Dravyaguna and more. I will explain these in the specializations section.
MS in Shalya Tantra – Master of Surgery
This is also a postgraduate course. It is about Ayurvedic surgery. Shalya Tantra means surgery in Ayurveda. Students who want to become Ayurvedic surgeons choose this course. Ksharsutra treatment is also taught here which is a type of Ayurvedic surgery for certain diseases.
Ph.D. in Ayurveda
If someone wants to become a researcher or a professor, they can do Ph.D. here. This is the highest level of education in Ayurveda.
Certificate Courses
The college also offers short courses like Ksharsutra Therapy and Panchakarma. These are for doctors who already have a degree and want to learn something extra. As of 2026 admissions are open for these certificate courses.
The admission process is a little complicated but I will try to explain it simply. The process for BAMS is different from MD and MS.
For BAMS Admission:
The first thing you need is a good NEET score. NEET is the national entrance exam for medical courses. Without NEET you cannot get admission. After NEET results come out, you have to go to the Maharashtra CET Cell website. The website is mahacet.org. You have to register there. Then you fill your application form. You will need to upload your documents like marksheets and certificates. Then you pay a small counselling fee online.
After that comes choice filling. This is where you pick the colleges you want. You can put R. A. Podar Ayurved Medical College as your first choice. Then you lock your choices. After that the system gives you a seat based on your NEET rank. If you get a seat here, you go to the college, show your documents and pay the fees. Your admission is confirmed.
There are about 4 rounds of seat allotment. If someone leaves their seat, it goes to the next person. There is also a stray vacancy round at the end for seats that are still empty. For All India Quota seats, a different body handles admissions. It is called AYUSH Admission Central Counselling Committee or AACCC.
For MD and MS, you need NEET PG marks. The process is similar to BAMS admission. One important thing to remember is that this is a government college. So the competition is very high. For general category students, you usually need more than 500 marks out of 720 in NEET to get a seat here.
This is one of the best parts about this college. Because it is a government college, the fees are very low compared to private colleges.
Fees for Different Courses:
|
Course |
Fees Per Year (Approximately) |
|---|---|
|
BAMS |
Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 51,000 |
|
MD in Ayurveda |
Rs. 5,000 (approximately) |
|
MS in Shalya Tantra |
Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 15,000 |
Some alumni said they paid only Rs. 15,000 total for their full 3 year MD degree. They paid Rs. 5,000 each year. That is very cheap for a postgraduate medical degree. Private colleges charge lakhs of rupees for the same degree.
Scholarships:
If you belong to a certain category, you can also get scholarships. Here are the main ones. The Maharashtra State EBC Scholarship is for students from the economically backward class. It can pay up to half of your tuition and exam fees. You have to be from Maharashtra for this.
The Government of India Post Matric Scholarship is for SC and ST students. If your family earns less than 2.5 lakh rupees per year, you can get full tuition fees, exam fees and some living expenses paid. There is also a scholarship for students who have a disability of 40 percent or more. They can get monthly allowance and tuition refund.
The college also helps students get education loans if needed.

From this table I can see that R. A. Podar is very similar to Nagpur in fees. But R. A. Podar is in Mumbai. Mumbai has more patients. So students get more clinical practice. Also having CCRAS on campus is a big advantage that not many colleges have. Private colleges like Tilak charge much higher fees.
If you want to apply to this college, here is what you need to do step by step. I have written this in a simple way.
Step 1 – Give NEET Exam
First you must give NEET UG if you want BAMS. If you want MD or MS, you give NEET PG. This is the most important step. Without clearing NEET nothing else matters.
Step 2 – Register on Mah cet Website
After results come, go to the website www.mahacet.org. This is the Maharashtra CET Cell website. Create your account there. Fill in your personal details and academic details properly.
Step 3 – Fill the Application Form
After registration, log in and fill the complete form. Be very careful here. Do not make any spelling mistakes in your name or other details. Mistakes can cause problems later.
Step 4 – Upload Your Documents
You need to upload scanned copies of these documents. Your Class 10 marksheet, Class 12 marksheet, NEET scorecard, domicile certificate, nationality certificate, caste certificate if you have one, and your photo and signature.
Step 5 – Pay the Counselling Fee
There is a small fee for counselling registration. Pay it online using your debit card, credit card or net banking.
Step 6 – Fill Your College Choices
This step is very important. You have to make a list of colleges you want. Put R. A. Podar Ayurved Medical College at the top if it is your first choice. Then add other colleges. When you are done, click the lock button. After you lock, you cannot change the order. So think carefully.
Step 7 – Wait for Seat Allotment
The system looks at your NEET rank and your choices. Then it gives you a seat. If you get R. A. Podar, go to the college in time. Show your original documents. Pay the admission fees. This confirms your seat. If you do not get a seat in the first round, do not worry. There are more rounds. Keep trying.
Infrastructure means the buildings and facilities available on campus. Let me describe what this college has. The campus is about 6 acres big. It is in Worli, Mumbai, near the sea. The view from campus is nice. There are two main college buildings. They have multiple floors. Classrooms, labs and offices are in these buildings. The classrooms have projectors which makes it easy to follow lectures.
The biggest facility is M. A. Podar Hospital. It is right next to the college. Students go there for their clinical training. They see real patients and learn how to treat them. This is very important for any medical student. The CCRAS building is also on campus. CCRAS is a national research body for Ayurveda. This gives students a chance to do proper scientific research in Ayurveda.
The herbal garden is one of the best things about this campus. It is over 6000 square feet. It has many different plants used in Ayurvedic medicines. Students can study these plants directly instead of just reading about them in books. Labs are available for each department. Practicals are done regularly as per the university timetable. The library has a good collection of books. It has both Ayurvedic texts and modern medical books.
For students who come from outside Mumbai, there is a hostel. Boys and girls have separate hostels. The hostel has hot water, filtered drinking water and basic room facilities. The best part is the rent is only about Rs. 4000 per year. That is very cheap for Mumbai. There are two canteens. One is inside the boys hostel. The other is on the campus. Food is average according to students. For sports, you can play cricket, volleyball and some indoor games. It is not a lot but basic facilities are there. The college also has a Panchakarma centre in the hospital. Students can learn Panchakarma treatment there.
Teachers are very important in any college. At R. A. Podar, the faculty is one of the strongest points. All teachers here have at least an MD or MS degree in their subject. That means every teacher is a specialist. You will not find a teacher who has only BAMS teaching you at the postgraduate level. For every subject, there are more than 6 professors. Each department has around 10 faculty members. This means if you have a doubt, there are many teachers you can go to.
The way teachers teach here is also good. They do not just read from slides. They talk about real patients they have treated. They share their experiences. This makes students understand better. Students also said teachers encourage them to think and ask questions. The college conducts exams every month. This helps students stay regular in their studies. There are also two term exams before the final university exam. The exam level is moderate to difficult. But students who study regularly do fine.
Sometimes the college calls outside experts for guest lectures. This is a good way for students to learn from different people.Teachers use English for the main theory subjects. For clinical discussions they sometimes use Marathi or Hindi. This makes it easier for students who are more comfortable in those languages.Students have rated the faculty 4.0 to 4.2 out of 5 on review websites. This is a very good score. It shows that the teaching quality here is high.
This college offers many specializations especially at the postgraduate level. Let me list them all.
For BAMS (Undergraduate Level):
BAMS is a general degree. You study all the main areas of Ayurveda. There are no specific specializations at this level. You learn everything.
For MD Ayurveda (Postgraduate Level):
After BAMS, you can specialize in one subject by doing MD. The subjects available at this college are:
Kayachikitsa is the study of internal diseases. It is the most popular MD subject. Panchakarma is the traditional Ayurvedic treatment of body cleansing and healing. Prasuti Evam Stri Roga deals with pregnancy, childbirth and women's health. Shalakya Tantra covers diseases of the eyes, ears, nose and throat. Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana is about making Ayurvedic medicines. Dravyaguna Vigyan is the study of medicinal plants and their uses. Kriya Sharir is like physiology in Ayurveda. It explains how the body works. Roga Nidan is the study of diseases and how to diagnose them. Swasthavritta is about staying healthy and preventing diseases.
For MS (Master of Surgery):
The only MS offered here is in Shalya Tantra which means Ayurvedic surgery. This includes learning Ksharsutra which is a special technique used for certain surgeries without cutting with a blade.
Certificate Courses:
The Ksharsutra Certificate Course is a short program for doctors who want to learn this specific technique. The Panchakarma Certificate Course is for those who want to specialize in this treatment method. Admissions for these are open in 2026.

My interest was in joining Ayurveda so I actually appeared for the NEET and also registered in the counselling so after all this process I was able to get Podar Ayurved College admission to the BAMS course. In our campus we had Ayurveda College, hospital and many things. This Ayurveda College has strong knowledge on the medicinal values and they also teach in that way so that we be strong in what we learn. RA Podar Ayurved Medical College fee structure as of now for the BAMS course is just Rs. 32,000 for the general quota students and it would be less only in our college.
This college have been among the high standard college as well as among the best Ayurveda colleges of the Maharashtra. Students can really try and take admission in this college if interested in Ayurveda because they really offer a kind of education that will shape our future and I’m pretty sure that we will be good Ayurveda doctor. I feel like the RA Podar Ayurved Medical College fee is also not very high so studying here will be good. This is one kind of Government College so it provides good internships in the final year as well provide stipend also when we are completing our one year internship in the hospital.
