When VES College of Arts, Science, and Commerce (Autonomous) opened its doors in 1979, it offered degree courses in all three streams. The UGC recognizes the college under Sections 2(f) and 12 and is permanently allied with the University of Mumbai (b). Besides, VESASC Mumbai also holds minority status for Sindhi Linguistic Minority. Furthermore, the college has been accredited by NAAC (3rd cycle) along with an "A" Grade and score of 3.26. Henceforth, VES College is one of the best colleges in Mumbai for Science and commerce.

From 2021-22, Vivekanand College Mumbai has been conferred autonomous status from UGC and the University of Mumbai. Although the college has authority over its curriculum, Mumbai University, the college's parent institution, is the one that grants degrees. The institution has received the "Best College Award" (Urban Area) for 2012–2013. It also received an endowment from the DST under the FIST program and the Star College award from the DBT in the 2015–2016 academic year.

VES College of Arts, Science & Commerce Courses are classified into two categories as Aided and Self financed courses. The aided courses are BSc, B Com, and BA. In contrast, self-financed courses are available in BA, BSc, B Com, BMS, MSc, M Com, and MA. In addition, three-year Ph.D. programs in Chemistry, Microbiology, and Physics are available under the self-financed category. VES College campus is located in the centre of Chembur on 4.03 acres of land. It comprises two buildings, including the Main Building, which has an auditorium, an AV room, a central instrumentation facility, computer laboratories, smart classrooms, and a staff room. In addition, the Vivekanand College Hostel facility is available for both boys and girls.

Every classroom has a microphone, an LCD projector, and a link to the Internet. The college contains labs for the following disciplines: physics, chemistry, microbiology, mathematics, psychology, biotechnology, computer science, and information technology. The Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) was built in the 2016–17 academic year. The Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, provided financing for the high-end research instruments under the FIST Scheme. The following research tools are available at CIF: a gas chromatography system, a sonicator, a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and an HPLC modular system with a PDA detector.

There are 200 seats available at the Library, which is located on the fourth level. The college library serves as the centre of learning with its extensive collection of books, e-books, common reference materials, and other audio-visual materials, including video cassettes and CD ROMs. In addition, the Library has subscriptions to both domestic and foreign journals. The College Library is entirely automated and has an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).
