IIT Dhanbad

IIT Dhanbad is formerly known as the Indian School of Mines (ISM Dhanbad). Initially, it was started as an institution to offer education in mineral and mining sciences. Today, it has fully-fledged into a technical institution with several academic departments. ISM IIT Dhanbad is situated in the mineral region of India, the city of Dhanbad. As an ISM, it came into existence in 1926. Henceforth, it is the 3^rd oldest Institute that got converted into an IIT. (After IIT Roorkee, IIT (BHU) Varanasi). On 25 May 2016, PM Narendra Modi approved amending the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961 to convert ISM Dhanbad to IIT Dhanbad.

The ranking of IIT Dhanbad according to NIRF 2021 is 26 for the Overall Category. In addition, it has secured 11^th rank among Top Engineering Colleges in India.
