IIT Dhanbad - Ranking, Admissions 2026, Placements

IIT Dhanbad is formerly known as the Indian School of Mines (ISM Dhanbad). Initially, it was started as an institution to offer education in mineral and mining sciences. Today, it has fully-fledged into a technical institution with several academic departments. ISM IIT Dhanbad is situated in the mineral region of India, the city of Dhanbad. As an ISM, it came into existence in 1926. Henceforth, it is the 3^rd oldest Institute that got converted into an IIT. (After IIT Roorkee, IIT (BHU) Varanasi). On 25 May 2016, PM Narendra Modi approved amending the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961 to convert ISM Dhanbad to IIT Dhanbad.

IIT JAM is the only way to apply for admission to IIT Dhanbad's MSC. The specializations include Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. To be eligible, students must hold a UG with at least 5.5 CGPA (out of 10) and at least 55 percent of the required marks. For SC/ST/PD candidates, a minimum score of 50% or a CGPA of 5.0 is necessary. Candidates who appear can also seek admission.
