Which Engineering Branch Offers More Career Option Outside Campus Placement

The formula for joining engineering stream around 2015- 2021 was very simple, choose for B.Tech CSE or IT from any good college. The career path of engineering graduates where set as mass hiring for done by companies like TCS, Infosys or Wipro.

Even core branch graduates became engineers after 3 months of training provided them by software companies.

“But today’s era is totally different

After the introduction of AI in 2023 the hiring percentage of IT sectors has come down to 60%.

The entry – level jobs in software companies, which was the learning process, has got replaced by AI tools like Co- pilot for boiler plate code and GPT – 5 for debugging.

This has created an unrest among students, to get placed on the Day – 1 or is my branch a useless choice? The answer is No. However, your branch open doors for you and will it be opened for you even when campus is shut. Further details are discussed below:

Why Campus Placement is Not the Only Career Route

2015-2021

2021-2026

FAQ

  1. Which branch offers the most backup options?
ECE and Mechanical. With these, you’ve got choices: land a core job, crack GATE or IES, aim for a PSU, or even jump to IT if you need to. CSE only works as a backup if you actually know how to code. Civil is really just helpful if you’re after a government job.
  2. Which branch should I pick if I want to start my own business?
CSE, no question. If you’re looking at apps, SaaS, or AI, all you need is a laptop and internet—you can launch stuff straight from your hostel. With Mechanical or ECE, hardware start-ups will burn through 10+ just on prototypes and labs. Civil start-ups take even more: money and deep industry connections.
  3. My family is in construction. Should I choose Civil?
Absolutely. You’ll fit right in and pick up everything—billing, sites, tenders. Throw in an MBA later and you’ll be set to grow the business. CSE won’t really help move things forward in construction.
  4. Can I switch from Mechanical to IT later?
Definitely. Tons of ECE, EEE, or Mechanical grads shift to IT after a six-month coding course. But going the other direction isn’t realistic—a CSE grad can’t step into serious Civil or Mechanical jobs without years of extra study.
