There are 13 core institutions, three regional campuses, and 593 affiliated colleges at Anna University. The University is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is the state's third-largest University, offering engineering, technology, architecture, and applied science programmes. It provides a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research-based programmes. Anna University's most popular courses include B.E., B.Tech, and MBA.

It was founded in 1978 by merging four well-known technological institutes in Madras (now Chennai). The UGC and AICTE have authorized it, and NAAC has given it an "A" rating. According to NIRF 2020, Anna Universiuty was ranked 20th in overall category. The UGC has also been designated as a "University with Potential Excellence (UPE)" for its research and development activities in Biomedical Engineering and Applications. In addition, the University Library has been ranked seventh in India for e-resources utilization and first in Tamil Nadu.

Anna University offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and research-based courses. In 2007, Anna University of Distance Education was founded. Distance education courses in MBA, MCA, and M.Sc. in Computer Science are available at the University.

Quacquarelli Symonds Limited's QS World Universities Ranking is an annual publication of university rankings. Its first list was produced in 2004, collaborating with THE, and it became autonomous in 2010. Anna University's QS World Ranking dropped from #651-700 in 2018 to #751-800 in 2019/ 2020. In the Citations category per professor, it had a score of 45.3 out of 100.

However, Anna University has advanced in the QS World Subject wise ranking in the "Engineering and Electrical" category in 2020.
