Sir Syed Ahmed Khan founded Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in 1920, and it is one of India's top universities, with a NIRF ranking of 17 in the University category. AMU has also been included in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2020. AMU is now ranked 8th or 9th in the country. Outside of Aligarh, the university has created three additional study centres in Murshidabad (West Bengal), Malappuram (Kerala), and Kishanganj (Bihar).
Many ranking agencies, including the NIRF, India today, Outlook, The Week, and US News, have ranked Aligarh Muslim University in various categories such as engineering, management, and law. The following are AMU's current year rankings:
- The QS World Rankings 2022 place Aligarh Muslim University in 1001-1200.
- Aligarh Muslim University is placed fourth among India's Government Universities 2021 (General) by India Today magazine.
- AMU was also ranked by Outlook magazine in the Social Science, Science, and Arts categories, with AMU receiving 9, 59, and 47, respectively.
- AMU is ranked 8-9th domestically and in the 801-900 bracket globally in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2020.
The NIRF has placed Aligarh Muslim University in various categories in its 2020 rankings. The university has a reputation.

- 17 in the University category
- 45 in the Management category
- 15 in Medical Category

The university is also ranked in India today 2020 rankings, with AMU receiving the following rankings in several categories:

Aligarh Muslim University Accreditation and Ranking
- In the NIRF India Rankings for 2021, AMU was listed among the top Ten Indian Universities.
- For the second year in a row, AMU is included in the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as Shanghai Ranking) list, which includes just 14 of India's best universities.
- AMU was placed fourth among Indian universities in the India Today Ranking 2021.
- In the CWUR (Centre for World University Rankings) World University Rankings 2021-22, announced in April 2021, AMU was rated ninth among Indian universities.
- In the subject-specific ranking findings of US News & World Report's 7th Annual Survey announced in December 2020, AMU rated #1 among all institutions and universities in India for the subject "Biology and Biochemistry." AMU is the only institution in India ranked in the discipline "Mathematics."
- US News & World Report rated AMU fourth overall among Indian universities in its 7th Annual Best Global Universities Rankings released in December 2020.
- For the first time, AMU is listed among the top 15 Indian institutions in the 2020 ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities, often known as Shanghai Ranking) top universities list.
- AMU's "Life Sciences" was ranked first among Indian universities in the Times Higher Education, London World University Ranking 2020 for the subject "Life Sciences."
- AMU's "Physical Sciences" was placed second among Indian universities in the Times Higher Education, London World University Ranking 2020 for the subject "Physical Sciences."
