Government Medical College in Jammu was established in 1973 to offer medical education and healthcare services. Initially, it trained 50 MBBS students annually and served as a referral center for Jammu Hospital. At Present, the college has an intake capacity of 150 students per year. GMC provides MBBS and Postgraduate training. The college is affiliated with several hospitals. Some of them are Sir. Col. R.N. Chopra Nursing Home, Medical College Hospital, CD Hospital, and SMGS Hospital.

Government Medical College Admission                  

The JK NEET Counselling handles admissions for the MBBS program at the GMC Jammu. They release a provisional cutoff during the first round of counseling. A merit list is published with candidates' names, roll numbers, categories, NEET marks, and ranks.

Applicants must have passed 10+2/HSC with at least 50% marks in PCB. They also need to qualify for the NEET UG exam conducted by the NTA. Candidates who qualify for NEET UG and are listed in the J&K NEET merit list 2024 can participate in J&K NEET counseling. During counseling, they need to choose GMC  Jammu as their preference. Admissions are granted based on choices filled, availability of seats, NEET-UG rank, and other factors. GMC Jammu is equipped with many modern facilities to create a great learning environment. Here are some of the facilities available:

• Animal House: It has an animal house with 40-50 animals for students' practical learning.
• Auditorium: The college has a big auditorium with 830 seats, located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Administrative block.
• Canteen: There are two separate canteens for faculty, students, and staff, one on the ground floor and another on the 5th floor of the college building.
• Central Computer Cell: A computer cell is set up in the Administrative Block for college administration, accounts, and student sections. All of the college work is computerized, and internet facilities are available.
• Central Library: The college library has separate sections for undergraduates, postgraduates, and staff, along with a reading hall. It subscribes to over 329 Indian and foreign journals annually and offers internet and photocopy facilities.
• Government Medical College Jammu Hostels: Five separate hostels, with a total of 549 rooms, are available for undergraduates and postgraduates. The hostels are located 200-500 meters from different hospitals. GMC Jammu Hostel fees are affordable since the government funds the college.
