Apparent to all, the only admission door to the B.Tech program at NIT Kurukshetra is through JEE Main. It means there is no provision for direct admission or through any other means. First, JEE Main results are announced, then seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling, which is run for a total of six rounds. After JoSAA, CSAB conducts a special round for filling leftover seats.
NIT Kurukshetra holds a position of a mid-to-upper tier NIT. On the one hand, it is not competitive enough like NIT Trichy or NIT Warangal at the top; on the other, it is a lot more difficult than the newer NITs. In case of General category students opting for Other State (OS) quota, CSE ties the race at around 6,000-8,500. This means JEE Main rank must be within the top 1-1.5% of all students for a genuinely strong performance.
Half of the seats, as in any NIT, are allotted to Haryana students (Home State quota) and half to students from other states (Other State quota). Students from Haryana enjoy somewhat relaxed cutoffs in all branches. For students coming from outside Haryana, the OS quota is lower, and so are the cutoffs to a more stringent level.
Best Specialisations at NIT Kurukshetra
1. Computer Engineering
Undoubtedly, this is the branch that students flock to the most at NIT Kurukshetra. The college itself refers to it as Computer Engineering, whereas most other colleges use the term Computer Science Engineering. A degree distribution includes programming, systems, AI, and databases. No wonder that the department enjoys the best placement scenario, with tech companies always knocking at its door.
2. Electronics & Communication Engineering
ECE being second on the list of choices is a blend of hardware and software figments. From integrated circuit design to telecom, embedded systems, and even software companies, students can land jobs anywhere. CE has higher cutoffs, whereas IT is at the lowest level, so ECE is one branch that students bet on when they slightly miss out on CE.
3. Information Technology
At NIT Kurukshetra, IT is almost identical to Computer Engineering as far as placement opportunities are concerned. Software companies generally do not differentiate between the two. The cutoff is a bit less tough than CE, which is why it remains the first choice for tech-oriented students.
4. Electrical Engineering
Electrical Engineering was one of the first departments of the institute and was established in 1963. The department faculty is composed of experienced and highly qualified professors, and they hire from power, energy, and even IT companies. A great choice for students with ranks in the 12,000-18,000 range under the General OS quota.
5. Mechanical Engineering
The mechanical department at NIT Kurukshetra is quite big and has a very good and strong alumni network. Students who want to work with manufacturing, automotive, or core engineering mostly do well here. Cutoffs are easier as compared to tech branches, and being located in Haryana brings further advantages in terms of getting industrial internships.

Conclusion
This is why NIT Kurukshetra should probably be higher on your list than the mid-tier NITs if you are in or near North India. Along with the academic side, one big advantage of its Haryana location is the easy access to Delhi-NCR companies for internships and jobs, which ranks very high in the priorities of students when by comparing two colleges of almost the same level.
For Computer Engineering and IT, you would ideally want a JEE Main rank below 8,000 in the General category. With about 13,000 ECE ranks should be getting very comfortable. With up to 18,000, Electrical Engineering is also a good option. Civil and Mechanical open even further, and the Home State quota provides Arunachal Pradesh students an additional cushion in all branches. If you are near the limit of your rank, make sure to register in every round and also check the allotments carefully.
