The Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) offers academic programs recognized by various educational bodies such as UGC-DEB, NCTE, RCI, and AICTE. The University received the recognized Status from UGC and started its academic operations in 2003-04. To make higher education more accessible, TNOU has a year-round admission policy with exams scheduled on weekends. They also use continuous assessment to ensure educational quality. The University leverages ICT advancements to enhance the quality of higher education.

In the past 20 years, TNOU has experienced remarkable growth, with over one million students enrolled in 234 programs across various disciplines and skill levels. These programs are offered through 11 Academic Schools, 5 Support Divisions, 1 Media Centre, and a network of Learner Support Centres and Community Colleges across Tamil Nadu.

TNOU was selected by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2008 to provide skill-based education and training through Community Colleges for disadvantaged groups. These skill programs are available at various levels, including Short Term, Certificate, Vocational Diploma, and Advanced Vocational Diploma.

The University has automated many learner support processes, including admissions, examinations, material distribution, and academic Counselling. With 105 teaching staff and 68 non-teaching staff members, TNOU is one of only six open universities in India to receive the 12B status from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Tamil Nadu Open University Admission

TNOU offers various educational programs. You can pursue a 3-year undergraduate degree in subjects like B.A., B.Com., B.Sc., BBA, and BCA. They also provide 2-year Master's programs such as MBA, MCA, M.A., M.Com., and M.Sc. Additionally, there are diploma and post-graduate diploma courses in different fields. TNOU even has certificates and vocational courses. You can get admission forms from the TNOU study centres and apply offline to apply for these programs. Final admission to these courses depends on your performance in the qualifying exams and counseling sessions.

TNOU provides self-learning materials in print and electronic formats. During specific months, they also conduct counseling sessions at various locations in the state. Additionally, applicants can register for one-year diploma programs or six-month certificate programs simultaneously with their main course of study.

Tamil Nadu Open University UG Admission

For UG Courses, admission is based on completing the 10+2 examination or TNOU's BPP program (Bachelor of Preparatory Program). Candidates who have not passed 10+2 must complete the BPP program to be eligible for the degree program. The BPP exams are conducted before the start of the semester exams.

BA: The BA program typically spans three years and consists of multiple subjects and courses. Candidates shall have passed the 10+2/HSC examination (or equivalent) from a recognized board or institution. There are no specific age restrictions for admission to the BA program at TNOU. TNOU BA Syllabus often includes a combination of core subjects, elective courses, and general education courses. B Com/BBA: Candidates should have completed 10+2/HSC from a recognized board. The University will announce the selection criteria and weightage for admission in the admission notification. Shortlisted candidates may be called for TNOU counseling or document verification as part of the admission process.

BCA: The BCA is designed to offer students a strong basis in computer science and information technology. The BCA program is typically a 3-year undergraduate course divided into six semesters. TNOU BCA Syllabus includes a combination of theoretical subjects, practical sessions, and projects related to computer science and IT. Candidates shall have passed 10+2/HSC (or its equivalent) from a recognized board or University. They should have studied Mathematics as one of the subjects in their 10+2 curriculum.

BSc in TNOU:  A specific criterion exists for candidates applying to the B.Sc course. They must be 10+2 pass out and have their respective specialization as one of their subjects. For admission into the Apparel and Fashion Design course, the candidates must have pursued a three-year Diploma course after the 10th standard. The candidates pursuing a two-year Diploma after the 12th standard/one-year Diploma after the 12th standard relevant to the fashion and textile field are also eligible to apply for this course.

Tamil Nadu Open University Distance MBA Admission

Tamil Nadu Open University Application Process

To apply for Distance Courses in TNOU, students must go to designated study centres to get application forms and information booklets. Students are selected based on their completion of the qualifying examination and participation in counseling sessions.

Here are the steps simplified:

  • You can get the form from the study centres by paying Rs. 100 in cash.
  • You can also request application forms by sending a demand draft of Rs. 150 to the Deputy Registrar, MPDD, TNOU, Chennai.
  • Submit your admission forms to the study centres by October, depending on the academic year.
  • After you submit the form, the study centre will give you an acknowledgment statement and send the forms to the Zonal Centers.
  • The Admission Wing will review the forms, assign an enrollment number, and provide ID cards to the study centres for distribution to students. Use this enrollment number for future reference.
  • Submit separate application forms if you're enrolling in a Diploma/Certificate Program under Dual Registration.
  • Pay the program fees to the University through the SBI or Indian Bank branches. Use the provided remittance Challan Form in the prospectus.
  • Submit the filled admission forms along with the university copy of the Challan.
  • Selected Candidates: Once selected, candidates must verify their documents, and Counselling will be scheduled on specified dates.

TNOU does not offer an executive MBA. However, the University offers a distance MBA course designed for working professionals or those who cannot afford a regular MBA.

Eligibility is to hold a Bachelor's Degree from any recognized University. The mode of admission process
is entirely online. To apply, access the official website. Then click on the available link, which states
'TNOU ONLINE ADMISSION'. It will lead you to a page where you can enter your application details.
Complete the application by following the prompts and providing the required information. Admissions
will offered on the basis of merit in the last qualifying exam.
