In Kerala, Alphonsa College is one of the pioneer institutions for the higher education of women. The college has now attained the status of a First Grade Woman’s College. It is declared a Minority Educational Institution by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institution, Government of Kerala. The college is a private institute affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, which offers undergraduate and post-graduate level courses. There was a BA program in streams like English, Economics, History, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics and B.Sc. in Botany, Zoology and Computer Applications, and B.Com and B.Voc. At the PG level, there is MA in English and Political Science as well M.Sc. in Zoology (aided courses), M.Sc. in Chemistry and Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (self-financing).
