BU College of Engineering at Boston University educates the technology leaders of tomorrow while pushing the boundaries of innovation that improve society. The College offers a slate of bachelor's degrees in several engineering disciplines, as well as master's and doctoral degrees for those pursuing careers in industry or research.

College offers research-based Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree programs, as well as Master of Engineering degrees for those pursuing careers in industry. In addition to programs in the departments of Biomedical, Electrical & Computer, and Mechanical Engineering, the College offers graduate degrees in the interdisciplinary divisions of Materials Science & Engineering and Systems Engineering. Dual degree programs are also offered.

Engineering Program

BU College of Engineering offered MEng, MS and Phd Degree programs. Top Engineering programs : 

Aerospace Engineer : Students interested in creating the next generation of aircraft and spacecraft can opt for a concentration in aerospace engineering within the mechanical engineering bachelor's degree program. 

Biomedical Engineering : Courses and research will cover diverse areas of engineering, including DNA investigation, biology and physiology, and microscopic-level tissue and organ analysis. A degree in biomedical engineering prepares you for a career in numerous areas of biotechnology, medicine and engineering.

Computer engineering : The computer engineering degree program encourages you to pursue your own hands-on research, while preparing you for a career in an evolving field that controls the future of communication. Today's computers link people, places and resources from around the world and manage communications systems, manufacturing systems, automobiles, and medical instrumentation. A multidisciplinary faculty addresses the design of state-of-the-art devices that directly impact future computational systems.

Electrical Engineering : Electrical engineering technologies will drive the 21st century. Electrical engineers harness electronic and electromagnetic energy to create new and better televisions, cellular phones and other consumer devices, as well as medical imaging, radar and fiber-optic technologies. 

Energy Technology : New engineering breakthroughs in energy and the environment will shape our society for the future. Undergraduates interested in being a part of these breakthroughs — and pursuing careers in green technology — will be able to add a concentration in energy technologies and environmental engineering within any of our degree programs. Adding this concentration gives you a specialized focus on critical issues such as clean energy and energy conversion and a strong background to advance yourself for the future.

Manufacturing engineering : Boston University pioneered manufacturing engineering and offers undergraduates the opportunity to add a concentration in this discipline to a mechanical engineering degree. Graduates of this program earn a bachelor's degree in one of engineering's foundational disciplines, while gaining specialized focus in manufacturing engineering, which includes micro-electronics, original product design and green manufacturing. Graduate students can pursue a research-based master of science degree or an industry-focused master of engineering degree in manufacturing engineering.

Mechanical Engineering : Mechanical engineering combines physics, manufacturing, and electrical and biomedical engineering. Specializing in areas like robotics and clean energy, mechanical engineers design and create medical devices, heating and cooling systems, and the engines of cars, boats and jets. In addition to offering a full suite of graduate degrees, the program allows mechanical engineering undergraduates to specify a career track by adding a concentration in aerospace engineering or manufacturing engineering.

Systems engineering : The Systems Engineering Division awards graduate degrees, but its faculty teaches undergraduates, who can minor in the discipline. Through multidisciplinary research, you'll examine and develop all types of systems, from robotics and manufacturing to networks and biological models, adding another dimension to your chosen field of study.


Admission Process at BU College of Engineering

The College of Engineering welcomes applications from students with diverse and unique backgrounds from across the world. Any well qualified person with a four year bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or with the equivalent international education is encouraged to apply for their degree program

Applying to Boston University, Applicants whose primary language is not English must meet an English proficiency requirement in one of the ways listed below. 

  • Internet-Based TOEFL (IBT): score of 71 with minimum scores of 17 in the Speaking and Writing sections.
  • Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT): score of 530.
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): an overall band score of 6.0 with no sub score below 5.5.
  • SAT Critical Reading: a minimum score of 420 on the Critical Reading Section of the SAT.
  • Pearson Test of English-Academic (PTE): score or 48.
  • Official TOEFL scores should be reported directly to University by the testing agency. (Scanned copies, photocopies, and Web results are not accepted.) 

Conditional Admission: Otherwise qualified applicants who do not meet one of the above test score requirements may apply for conditional admission if they have the following:

  • TOEFL IBT score of 55 or higher
  •  IELTS of 5.5

If you apply for conditional admission, you will be asked on the application form if you wish to apply for Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP). You must pass one of the required English proficiency examinations before you can begin regular classes.

BU Engineering Boston Facilities and Infrastructure

  • The large dormitories include the 1,800-student Warren Towers, the largest on campus, as well as West Campus and The Towers. The smaller dormitory and apartment style housing are mainly located in two parts of campus: Bay State Road and the South Campus residential area. Bay State Road is a tree-lined street that runs parallel to Commonwealth Avenue and is home to the majority of BU's town houses, often called "brownstones".
  • The Mugar Memorial Library is the central academic library for the Charles River Campus. It also houses the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, formerly called the Twentieth Century Archive, where documents belonging to thousands of eminent figures in literature, journalism, diplomacy, the arts, and other fields are housed.
  • The George Sherman Union (GSU), located next to Mugar Memorial Library, provides students with a food court featuring many fast-food chains, including Panda Express (which opened Fall 2006), Starbucks, and Pinkberry. The GSU also provides lounge areas for students to relax or study. The basement of the George Sherman Union is home to the BU Central lounge, which hosts concerts and other activities and events.
