About Birkbeck University of London, England , UK

Birkbeck University of London (formerly  Birkbeck College, informally Birkbeck), is a public research university located in Bloomsbury, London, United Kingdom, which specialises in evening higher education, and a constituent college of the federal University of London.

It offers many Master's and Bachelor's degree programmes that can be studied either part-time or full-time, though nearly all teaching is in the evening. It also admits full-time (as well as part-time) students for PhDs. Its staff members have excellent research reputations in subjects such as English, Economics, Statistics, History, History of Art, Philosophy, Psychology, Spanish and Science. It also offers many continuing education courses leading to certificates and diplomas, foundation degrees as well as other short courses.

History:

  • Birkbeck was founded in 1823 as the Mechanics Institution by George Birkbeck, who had the radical view that high-quality university education should be available in the evening for working Londoners and those who would otherwise not be able to study.
  • Birkbeck's traditions of social inclusion and radical thinking have been changing lives through higher education ever since.
  • Birkbeck became part of the University of London in 1920 on condition it continued to provide flexible, evening teaching.
  • In 2007 Birkbeck took its flexible teaching provision to Stratford, east London, with a selection of courses.
  • In 2010 Birkbeck introduced intensive, three-year evening undergraduate courses to complement its traditional part-time, four-year evening courses.
  • All Birkbeck's undergraduate degrees now take three years, taught on weekday evenings between 6pm and 9pm.
  • In autumn 2013 Birkbeck opened University Square Stratford, a £33-million purpose-built campus in Stratford, east London.

  • Birkbeck's central London buildings, in the heritage area of Bloomsbury, have had a major upgrade across the campus, including developments such as a state-of-the-art cinema and gallery space in the School of Arts, and refurbished teaching rooms in the main campus building.

In 2023, Birkbeck will reach a very special milestone: our 200th anniversary.

Perhaps the most striking reflection about nearing our bicentennial is how little the core mission of our institution has changed – and for good reason.

The people, technology and the capital city itself have changed beyond recognition across these past two centuries. But George Birkbeck’s mission of providing evening university education for all remains our mission today, because it remains absolutely vital.
